After almost 50 years of teaching, let me make a stab at this. Up until about the 3rd grade you are really dealing with attention span. I tell the parents, five minutes of FOCUSED practice a day for the first year is a reachable goal. With this, please, PLEASE make sure the student fits the instrument. Better to start with a ukulele and fit the body/neck than to force a kid to play a 3/4 size guitar that simply doesn't fit. Between about 4th and 8th grade a kid will typically fit a 3/4 size guitar just fine. By their HS years most gals will be at their growth potential, so, for example, a Martin SC-13 is a perfect fit, boys, depending upon height, can go with a full size acoustic. Be careful with an electric guitar, they are VERY HEAVY and without a good strap, the guitar will sink on their lap, throwing it completely our of wack for addressing the fret board. Now, the big issue, the pick. I have to custom fit each pick to the student's finger length. This is MANDATORY, if you do not do this you will force large muscle groups up the arm to do things they were never supposed to do!!! Finally, if practice sessions are not challenging and they LOVE the process, consider yourself blessed! Much success!

Good advice. It's never too early or too late, but it has to be their desire, not yours. It's a mistake to think there's a 'right' instrument for kids too. If they learn to love music, that's a lifetime gift. Getting hung up on what to play or when probably won't help.
