In this coin video Richard talks about these pirate silver coins. These pieces of eight are very popular and collectible today. If you divide up a piece of eight into 8 pieces then 2 of the 8 will equal a quarter and that is where we get the term 2 bits from when referring to a quarter.

If you've ever seen colonial currency they often said something like redeemable for 2 Spanish milled dollars. Those are the coins that the currency is talking about. Neat piece of history

In cheerleading, I never know what the cheer "two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar; all for the Panthers, stand up and holler" meant or where it came from. Glad to know how the "bits" add up.

A piece of eight is a cut portion of the 8 reales. It was a way to make change by cutting across the coin with a knife into halves quarters and eights.

I have many different types of reales coins from Mexico to Chile, and from the late 1500's to the last 8 reales from Mexico, who were the pattern for the early pesos. The ordinary silver dollar was smaller, but the trade-dollar was almost similar in silver content and composition. It's weird to think of the fact that the Spanish imported so much silver and gold from their colonies, that they created a devaluation of metal money, because it was just too much money compared with other goods and services needed!

I have several of these myself. I wear a pillar dollar dated 1788 to Disneyland. As a kid I used to sound like all the other boys in my class going on The Pirates of the Caribbean. "I want some of that treasure "!! Now I wear a full 8 Reales Pillar Dollar coin!! Gets lots of attention and makes a great conversation piece while waiting in line.
