I came out as gay in 1983ā¦in Oklahoma Cityā¦at age 16ā¦during the beginnings of AIDS/HIV.
Yes, often LGBT establishments (bars mostly) opened in old commercial buildings in areas deemed undesirable by the community at large. The rent was low, businesses wouldnāt attract a lot of attention or complaints.
At the same time, for the same reasons, weād move into old houses that needed some TLC and a new color scheme. š
As acceptance increased eventually these commercial areas and residential areas became one. On the coasts this probably happened a good 20 years before in the middle of the country.
In St. Louis the Gayborhood has relocated over the years as it would get too expensive for young LGBT to begin. So they move on and find a new area as the old one gets more chain establishments, trendy restaurants, etc.
A lot of the gayborhood is classic self-segregation. Many racial groups have done this for years ā comfort being around your own kind. The businesses you patronize are nearby and their owners are also your neighbors

Would love to see a couple videos covering the topics of gayborhoods. There's a lot to delve into: their role in the LGBT history.....their relationship with cities and city officials over time (both positive and negative)....their future in an increasingly LGBT-accepting society. Also, there's a lot to go into the whiteness and maleness of historic gayborhoods and how that's impacted women, and people of color in and out of the queer community.

Growing up and into my 20s and 30s, Dupont Circle, the gayborhood in DC, was a literal lifesaver. So, yes, this is an important aspect of queer culture worth being remembered.
