Video of me planting it:    • How To Plant Your First Garlic Bed

Hard neck garlic is well know for being extra flavorful and pungent :eyes: so I knew I had to figure out how to get reliable production going down here in San Diego. Usually we are relegated to soft neck garlic only as it doesn't require any cold weather to grow well. Hard neck garlic is usually recommended for colder climates due to the fact that it is hardier but also it actually needs some cold to grow properly. So what I did was place the garlic in the fridge for about a month before planting it.
This process is know as vernalization which tricks the garlic into thinking it experienced true winter in the ground and that triggers its lifecycle to begin. Due to this I actually harvested the scapes way back in January as the garlic thought it had gone into spring. Now I know that if I want to produce large early heads of garlic I can simply hack it by vernalizing in the future.
I planted the garlic in a YouTube video back in October so we are actually about 6 months deep into growing this garlic allowing me to use the usually unproductive months of winter to produce garlic early!

I grew up in Los Angeles. My mom always put flower bulbs in the fridge before planting because they need a cold period. So it's not a surprise that garlic is the same 🙂

I did this with garlic I bought from the store that sat for too long in the fridge and sprouted as a result. I just popped it into my earth box and it took off.

I cold stratified seeds wrapped in a hand towel in my freezer for a month. Got great results with lavender!

Lol people been doing this for garlic in warm countries for a while. You can also freeze seeds that need to be stratified in case you don't know. It will help a lot of things sprout that come from northern climates.
