Drivers in Seattle, home to 27th-worst traffic in world, waste 58 hours a year on roads

New data confirms what Seattle area drivers already knew: commuting in the Puget Sound region can be a huge time-suck—and it’s worse now than a year ago.

The Seattle metro area ranks 27th in the world — yes, in the world — for having terrible traffic congestion, according to a new report from INRIX. Seattle ranks No. 10 amongst U.S. cities in the new analysis of global traffic patterns in 2023.

The average Seattle driver lost 58 hours sitting in traffic in 2023, according to INRIX. That’s much more than the national average of 42 hours.

It's also quite an increase from 2022 in the Seattle area, when drivers lost 46 hours, meaning an extra 1.5 work days sitting in the car.

Seattle has the worst drivers I have ever seen. They simply have no clue!

fun fact 20+ years ago WSDOT got a grant to improve road conditions and they had a choice to either add carpool lanes or a rail line right down the middle of I5.. they chose the carpool lanes because "that's what people would rather have" and I5 has been a nightmare of construction ever since.

This problem could be solved by encouraging companies to offer work from home positions. This would also solve the environmental problem, and safe companies money as well.

They're not losing money, they just don't make as much as they used to That's the difference.

You can thank America for being the slowest country to hop on efficient mass public transpo.

If the powers that be, really wanted to solve this traffic/commute/environmental climate impact problem, they would encourage companies to offer work from home positions.

Thats why you build a huge rapid transit system so you arent forced to drive and clog up the streets with your car

Drivers have gotten MUCH worse over the past 3-4 years. Id reckon having a generation skip in-car tests and letting 7-10 million illegals in has certainly added further congestion and stupidity to our roads.

So to add to the problem, they are going to repair I-5 during traffic daytime hours, not at night. Clearly those in charge don't care.

Nothing else matters if you don’t create alternatives to driving.

That’s why people who can do their job at home need to be able to do it.

perfect, my job should pay for my commute. ...lucky for me though, I'm going home in the morning while everyone else is going to work, so I have open roads the whole way back

People mugrating over ti public transit is the right way to reduce traffic congestion unlike adding more lanes.

Lets reduce lanes for regular people, and give the wealthy their own lanes that they write off as business expenses. Then, lets do road and civic projects during the day when everyone is on the road.

Two-lane roads and 25 mile an hour surface streets, a light every 200 feet and it takes four minutes to get through every light. The city Department of transportation leaders should be fired.

Remote work, for jobs that can be done remotely, would cut down some of that cost. USA has to advance to stop with the slave master type of thinking, where you have to see someone working to know they are working. There is still a lot of time wasted, with the mandatory breaks, etc. My team has been way more productive since remote work was implemented.

Increasing population density will make gridlock traffic much worse.

Stop making people go into offices when they can be more productive at home.

I remember when I moved up here 16 years ago there was only traffic between 5-7, times have changed

Im convinced that if you get a drivers license issued in Washington State that it really came out of a cracker jack box.
