I don’t actually understand why academic composers are so interested in doing things that are “impossible” to “pull off?” What is the point? I don’t understand what “boundary pushing” even means in music. I hear this all the time, and it seems nonsensical based on the music that is already out in the world. Music is mathematical. You’re just rearranging the numbers essentially, and so there is a finite aspect to what works. And on top of that, with these highly conceptual, esoteric works, I often find that the composer doesn’t even have a sense of whether or not the piece failed or succeeded. My point is, why is this so often the aim rather than communication or connection, etc? - (a genuine question from a longtime concert violinist and sometimes composer who has performed many terrible modern pieces by other composers)
