My daughter and dog are always digging holes in the back yard. Today Stori ran up to me and said "DAD something shiny is in the dirt!" There were two old Japanese coins buried in the back yard. Im going to do some research into them and also maybe do some more digging.

I love the fact that your daughter's first reaction is to thank the Chinese. It was sweet, you seem like a good dad. Thank you for the chuckle!

Those coins are either real or recreations of a Japanese Shu which was used as currency in the mid 19th century in Japan under Emperor Komei. The characters in order from top to bottom mean "one" "shu" "silver". There should be some characters on the back that are more complicated looking that give more minting information. Pretty cool find, and if they're real and you wanted to sell them each one is probably worth around 25 bucks to a collector that wants them.

I'm guessing that they are jewelry pieces. Maybe insets to complete a piece like a bracelet, necklace or a broach. If there is any soldering on the back could be earnings. Are Japanese coins round or rectangular?
