I believe this is further complicated by the fact that plain consonants are somewhat aspirated in the word-initial position. However, in the word-medial position, they are purely plain. Example: The 기억 in “가가“ are pronounced slightly differently, with more air on the first one. This makes it harder for learners to distinguish plain and aspirated consonants when they are in the first position
