As a working class musician living in the UK (Northern Ireland), I can say that the situation is quite dire. I pursued composition at university as I loved it and was lucky enough to get a student loan for tuition costs. But it is so difficult and demoralising trying to make a living pursuing music (the arts in general) in the current economic climate.

As these are UK composers, it's worth noting that massive funding cuts towards orchestral/classical/contemporary music is sweeping the UK currently. The increasing precarity and non-unionisation of working class life is also an issue here. More so on the pop side, we had brexit ruin the opportunity of touring Europe for a better chance of making a living. "Working class" meant something different in these composer's times - more of a Fordist model of unionised labour and robust welfare states. There was also a thriving public arts infrastructure - and stronger ties to Europe (hence easier working and educational relations with France). It's still possible to make it, but my God it's a miserable bet these days. There may be nice spots in film/TV or games still around though. The best bet, in the UK at least, is to get out of the working class first (unless you're a skilled tradesman); bust yourself for a middling position in insurance, finance, marketing, tech etc in a big city and pursue composition on the side when you have that financial and temporal stability.

Even more serious assets now are more important than wealth (ie it depends on your parent's wealth). So I supect music would not be any different to anything else in terms of trends in labour mobility.

Tell that to Havergal Brian. Barely got any performances of his music until his 80's and 90's. One of the world's great symphonists. And whenever his music is performed he gets snooty reviews in the Graun from ignorant dunces like Andrew Clements.

It is possible, but as usual, it isn't very likely. If you want to make a difference as a contemporary composer, you might need a solid education, good electronic equipment, and fancy new softwares, all of which cost money.

A better question is “Why do working class artists desire to be socially prominent?”

It's certainly not desirable to have working class composers?
