As these are UK composers, it's worth noting that massive funding cuts towards orchestral/classical/contemporary music is sweeping the UK currently. The increasing precarity and non-unionisation of working class life is also an issue here. More so on the pop side, we had brexit ruin the opportunity of touring Europe for a better chance of making a living.
"Working class" meant something different in these composer's times - more of a Fordist model of unionised labour and robust welfare states. There was also a thriving public arts infrastructure - and stronger ties to Europe (hence easier working and educational relations with France). It's still possible to make it, but my God it's a miserable bet these days. There may be nice spots in film/TV or games still around though.
The best bet, in the UK at least, is to get out of the working class first (unless you're a skilled tradesman); bust yourself for a middling position in insurance, finance, marketing, tech etc in a big city and pursue composition on the side when you have that financial and temporal stability.

As a working class musician living in the UK (Northern Ireland), I can say that the situation is quite dire. I pursued composition at university as I loved it and was lucky enough to get a student loan for tuition costs. But it is so difficult and demoralising trying to make a living pursuing music (the arts in general) in the current economic climate.
