The fact that their, there, and they're all start with "the", but for some reason peace and piece use a different first vowel still throws me off as an adult ๐Ÿ˜‚

I sometimes tell my students English is actually five languages in a trenchcoat when they're frustrated with this kind of nonsense.

As a homeschooling mom, Iโ€™m so glad for curriculum that teaches me how to teach the rules, and the rule breakers, which has made teaching my 6 kids how to read super easy. โค Teaching my twins has tested my limits, so teachers that can teach 15-30 5-year-olds how to read all at once are out of this world amazing!

I was an ESOL tutor for 2 years. Some of the lovely people there were about to cry in frustration, and I was right there with them on that. My grandmother came over from Belgium and I do not know how she did it.

And to add insult to injury we often use here and there and the same sentence. Seems like a recall an old Sesame Street with Grover teaching here and there lol.

Read to your kids. Kids need to see adults reading. If possible, make regular trips to the library. You can borrow e-books and audio books from libraries. You can get books on your phone. Libraries and community centers may have a reading program for tots and older kids. Kids who have parents who read come to school ready to learn. There are Literacy Centers for adults who want to learn to read or want to improve their reading. Reading material needs to be age appropriate and at the child's reading level. There are lists of books from the ALA on the Internet. Many of these resources are free. (I'm a passionate reader and retired Reading Specialist). Sorry for my scattered thoughts, but there's so much information I want to pass along. Students learn to read from Kindergarten through 3 rd grade. In grade 4 kids read to learn and that is when parents and teachers start to see problems. Talk to your child's teacher if you have concerns, but give the teacher a few weeks to get to know his or her kids.

I have major respect for all of the teachers that have to make it make sense! English is one of the hardest languages to learn and teach! Thanks for bringing attention to this, a lot of of us as parents and human beings in general, need to know how grateful we should be, it is to be have someone trying to get our kids interested and keep them involved. Otherwise, not one of our kids would be talking or even able to read! โคโค๐Ÿ˜‚

Retired elem. teacher here. How to Do It: Our language is insane. Kids need phonics and sight words. The talent of the teacher is teaching them how to tell which is which. (Hint: context. Because kindergarteners sure get context.) You have the crazy nailed. ๐Ÿ˜…

Bahahaha! I homeschool now, but my son went to public school for K-3!!! Now, we are still doing spelling & learning vocabulary, so we have these moments often. They are just more fun with 14 y.o. sarcasm thrown in, rather than tears of frustration ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ By the way, my favorite so far has been his reaction to the word "colonel"! He said "Where is the "R"
