There’s a lot going on in this fast-paced turnaround lick but the main takeaway is that I’m targeting the major 3rd’s of the V, IV and I chords to create a strong connection between my note choices and the underlying harmony.
Targeting chord tones is the name of the game when it comes to tasteful blues improvisation and it requires you to look beyond scales and incorporate other improvisational tools such as triads and arpeggios, which allow you to focus more on the notes that matter.
