Oh wow. Thank you so so much for this information! Anemia runs in my family but no doctor has ever told me to take it every other day. Just take more, More, MORE! And then I get so sick that I can't take any more and my iron levels suffer. You rock, Doc❤️

I have anemia and learned through trial and error to take iron every other day. Mostly because of the side effects. Be warned!! 1. Some people can not take sulfate based irons (I can't). These people tend to get weapons grade gas. If you can not take sulfate based iron, try the glucanate based iron or slow iron. 2. Iron can cause your stool to become tar like, i.e. very sticky and hard to get everything off when wiping. Get a bidet! 3. After taking iron for a month, if you are still feeling like you're low on iron, go back to the doctor and get more blood tests to see if your iron has come up. You might need to increase your intake or you might even need an infusion. Speaking of which, I need to make a call....

Also anemia can be caused due to other reasons: like vitamin B12 deficiency (common in vegetarians and vegans), folic acid deficiency.

I've had an iron deficiency for 25+ years. No one ever told me this. Doctors told me I just didn't eat well enough, & I needed to do better. Ive been anemic for most of my life. I wish I'd known earlier. I will be sure to tell the women I know!

My doctors had me taking it every day despite how much it hurt my joints. I started every other day because it was more effective and it hurt me less. And my doctors scolded me skipping days. Flash forward to this study and the recent genetic testing that diagnosed me with alpha thalassemia trait. My iron was never below the normal level but was low on that range. And it stayed low on the range even with the iron because I have two deletions of the alpha gene. And I’m not supposed to take extra iron because of that condition and the damage it can do to my joints taking extra iron.

What helped solve my iron deficiency was to stop having a period. I had tried everything up to infusions. My period symptoms were pretty bad so stopping my period with hormonal birth control was very helpful.

Also: Take it with vitamin C like an orange or broccoli. Avoid eggs, bread, chocolate, tea, coffee, and other mineral supplements when you take your iron.

Doc I gotta warn you, once an iron deficient Texan figures out how much 5 kilos of beef is in pounds, they W I L L take that as a challenge

Also, don't take magnesium and iron together, they use the same receptors in the gut according to my dietician! Magnesium can help with the constipation so a doc may recommend it. Thank you soooo much for posting this! I have had iron deficiency anemia for most of my life to the point that I have gotten iron infusions. This is fantastic!

Please make a full video on iron deficiency anemia and how to effectively treat it. It would be useful to so many of us

I've suffered from extreme iron deficiency for years. It was never successful. But with my current doctor, who is a really great one, it worked very fine! I'm not having enough iron in my blood, and the cruel 10+ years of insomnia are mostly gone. I've never thought that iron deficiency makes hardcore insomnia.

For many people, it's an absorption issue, so supplements won't help. Supplements can also cause painful stomach issues (ie it feels like knives or glass are in your stomach) for people with IBS or SIBO or other GI issues. Iron transfusions are far better

Nothing like having the reminder that there is some good left in humanity. These videos seems to pop up right on time, especially after dealing with so many crazy and self-destructive folks. Thanks

5 kilos of beef a day? That sounds like a challenge to me!

This is my favorite trick as a pharmacist when anyone asks about iron.

I just had an iron transfusion instead. Got a slight temperature elevation a few hours after but it worked out quite well for me. Really quick way to get an iron boost.

I was anemic with every pregnancy and the doctor told me to take SloFe -- which worked very well. Then a bit before menopause I started to feel exhausted and had almost no energy. It took me a while to figure out that it felt an awful lot like when I was anemic. I started taking SloFe every other day and it helped almost immediately.

Also, don’t take iron at the same time you take calcium (if you take calcium or tums or Pepcid or drink any high calcium milk or nut milk). They interfere with each other. I tell patients to take iron in the morning and calcium in the evening/night.

When you're truely iron deficient honestly look into getting a blood transfusion. It's the only thing that made an impact for me. And then i promptly bled half of it out again 😢
