Alkan could be hit or miss. But when he hit, he really hit. He was a bold and ambitious composer

I usually am not a fan of Alkan's music, since he often obsesses over a single idea. But Le Vent is a great exception. One of my favorite pieces of music ever written.

Some have said that this piece inspired Liszt’s Chasse-Neige, but that’s not true. The melody for Chasse-Neige came from Liszt’s original Etude in Douze Exercices, which was published in 1827, when Liszt was 15. He then expanded that to the super chromatic version we hear in Douze Grandes Etudes, which were published in 1837 - the very same year this piece was published. Remember, the “Transcendental Etudes” of 1852 were not the original versions of the work, but rather a simplified revision of the 1837 original pieces. The original “Chasse Neige”, which was simply called Etude No 12 of the Douze Grandes Etudes, and which was nearly identical to the 1852 final version and contained all the same evocative chromatic effects, was published the same year as this piece, and written a year or two before. All that said, this is still a great work, and shows how many composer-pianists were thinking along the same lines during the Romantic period and exploring the effects the piano could create.

aaaa. I hate that people go "Virtuosity bad" like. no. why was Liszt's concert days so successful? thats because virtuosity is fun!!! it is a musical tool. it heightens the emotions. the awesomeness of the work. BUT ALSO. remember the beauty. in calmer works. like those of satie. those are good too!!!(okay enough sleep deprived youtube comments)

The funniest thing is most people who criticise Alkan have barely any knowledge on music theory and history. Of course he isn't up there with the biggest geniuses but some of his stuff is FIRE

Can you talk slower on the shorts? Too fast and rushed. Sorry, my darling, but I'm an old broad and can't keep up like most youngsters. I'm from a time before the open internet and smartphones. ❤️ you! 😊
