My middle child can tell you all about a subject but has a hard time writing that way. So we go slowly building skills. Writing exercises and some writing I just don't correct since the goal is getting words on paper. We have gone about it step by step building outlines, paragraphs, intros, conclusions and then different types of essays. Some of my kids were older starting RC but this year I'm having everyone do daily written narration. For my oldest she struggles to retell what she reads but is a great writer but really doesn't like to read or pay attention to what she's reading. She reads the words but chooses not to digest it. So for her written narration will help with that lazy reading. My middle child needs confidence in writing a page a day without over thinking. My youngest is learning to write sentences. So everyone including my 12th grader will do daily narration of poems, short stories, speeches and pre selected podcasts I've made a playlist of that includes a variety of topics. Aside from daily narration they will work on essays every other week. My kids have a hard time with an essay a day so over the next year I hope to merge daily narrations into daily essays. Let them see they are capable of 1-2 pages daily. Starting with a retelling of a short story where they don't have to be creating something from scratch just write everything they remember about what they read in their own words. Prayerfully this year they can all grow in confidence with writing and reading.
