May I recommend watching someone by the name of Mercury Stardust just for general learning about home improvement skills? If you wanna, I've learned a lot watching her stuff!
My idea though with the fireless place is maybe make it a family project? Ask your family what they might wanna paint on it and then maybe have them help?
It's in what looks like the living room right? What better place for a family produced mural!

Paint store employee here!
If you dont plan to ever have heat there again, a mural could be fun, as could a "unique tile" approach (kiddos and possibly parents pick bricks and paint them).
A bronze or taupe tone would lean into the soothing greens of your furniture.
You could also convert the hole into a bookshelf, or use it as a display space. It could be fun to rotate holiday decor in there, or have your kids make rag dolls you can display in there.

We bought a house that the previous owners had painted completely white including the brick fireplace. We were able to take a few different shades of reds, browns and gold paint and a giant car sponge and paint each of the bricks to look like real brick. We scattered the paint colors to make it look like bricks picked from a pile and semi mixed colors together to get a unique brick color for each one. Easy to do with minimal skill.

Pressed flowers! The grout could be in a neutral sage, the bricks in three or four shades of taupe, and then use whimsy to choose which bricks get pressed flowers. Finish with clear acrylic. Ta-da!
Maybe even do a wheel-of-the-year feel by starting with pressed spring flowers at one end, brighter flowers, autumn leaves, then evergreens? Might be too ambitious but it could work.

As someone who also has a fireless place. They are a decent decoration, but pretty permanent and hard to decorate around. I feel you.
