I started re-reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung and, while I do still think itā€™s an amazing book with some fantastic insights and I highly recommend it, I was struck by how dogmatic it was.

The book outlines the insulin model of obesity, which suggests that people gain weight when they consume excessive amounts of processed carbohydrates, which in turn causes insulin levels to rise and results in the body storing fat.

Basically too many (processed) carbs leads to insulin resistance, which leads to fat storage.

This model has a lot of merit and a lot of truth. Insulin resistance absolutely plays a huge part in weight gain and obesity.

But soooo much of the book is dedicated to also talking about why the calorie model of obesity (that weight gain is caused by eating too many calories and that simply reducing calories will elicit weight loss) is completely false.

Dr Fung presents it as an either/or model. Whereby only one can be true and therefore the other must be false.

And this fallacy isnā€™t unique to The Obesity Code. Its present in diet dogma everywhere. That not only is the solution presented correct, it is, in fact, the ONLY solution.

But in reality, each model of obesity and each diet brings something new to the table.

Both insulin resistance AND a surplus of calories can contribute to fat storage. They are not mutually exclusive.

There is no one simple, right answer. ALL of these variables must be taken into account in order to get the most accurate picture.

This is why people so often get led astray or get overwhelmed and confused in the nutrition space. Because people who are trying to SELL things over-simplify their own model to make it easy to understand and then condemn other models.

But itā€™s precisely this over-simplification and condemnation that is keeping us stuck in the obesity epidemic. No one is actually trying to solve it. Theyā€™re just trying to profit off it.

So the takeaway here is that the human body is a COMPLEX system. The true ā€œanswerā€ for weight loss is a COMPLEX model.

"They're all wrong because they're all correct..." That was deep. I'm sure the same applies to weight loss you have to find what works for you. The best health plan (diet) is the one you'll do.

At the end of the day, if you goal is just to weigh less, you literally cannot lose weight unless youā€™re in a calorie deficits. No other way around it.

Yes! This is why I did a mass fitness YouTube unfollowing (besides you and a few others). Hearing people argue about calories in/calories out, fast/donā€™t fast, carbs/no carbs, itā€™s exhausting and probably doing more harm than good.

I've always respected your advice bc I know you know what you're talking about, As you said with so many people out there that are like "everyone else is wrong and my opinion is correct" is always such a turn off. Stuff like that makes me think "okay but what are you selling me?" And then literally 2 seconds later it's "buy my course/book and I'll fix your problems"

Iā€™ve maintained a 150+ pounds weight loss for over 20 years. The Law of Thermodynamics. It IS that simple.

I think it's because people don't use their legs enough. People aren't traveling by foot anymore. I am proof. When I was a teenager I walked like two miles a day. I started gaining weight after I stopped walking.

Calories in, calories out. Point to literally any single person ever who lost weight in a calorie surplus. Point to literally any one ever who gained weight in a calorie deficit. If youā€™re not losing weight, you arenā€™t in a deficit. If you are gaining weight, you are in a surplus.

Calories in calories out. Has worked for me! Was eating 2600, working out 4-5 times a week and gained a lot of muscle but also fat. Went from 146-153 in a couple months ( I was eating healthy and slow). I wanted to cut, so I lowered down to 2100 calories and didnā€™t see fast enough results so cut down to 1900 right now with a cardio included. Iā€™m at 144 and planning on going to 140 before repeating. But yes I do have a fast metabolism and yes I eat junk food here and there lol, but calories in calories out has helped : D

If you were right, we would expect so see greater fat loss in people eating high fat, low carb diets vs. groups eating low fat, high carb, but we don't. When calories are equated, we always see the exact same, predictable amount of fat loss between the diet groups. Calories in, calories out perfectly predicts fat loss and fat storing. You can repeat it as many times as you want. Genetics of course play a factor in calories out, though: some people have higher BMRs and higher NEATS, and people also react differently to a calorie excess since some people increase their NEAT, while others decrease it.

However, less calories = weight loss. That part is quite typically simple.
