On a fullsize vehicle or anything really you do one side then lay some paper over it then tape it so it won't mive then use pencil graphite, charcoal, chalk (my choice), etc to mark your tape lines then use a piynce wheel to make holes into the paper. Turn it over then lightly sand to open up the holes. Lay it onto you surface taped so it wont move then use a pounce bag made from powdered chalk and something the chalk can come through when pounces/ hit onto the paper template. When done remove the template and theres your pattern to tape out. On small things taoe isnt to much but when doing a car you will use a lot of tape and masking materials. I used to get the rolls of waste news print from a news paoer company near me. It was free and just a few lasted me forever. I used it to mask every thing unless I needed something heavier duty then I'd use poster board. Usually this was for helmets that I was painting for someone to jeep the over spray doesn't get to the inside padding or foam if the helmet.
