Ngl I love the ink splash technique, itâs engaging. As of recent years, Iâve sorta refined the technique by studying generative sequences and emulating particle interaction, it makes the bones of the piece extremely organic, and form emerges from the patterns! I also love using âhidden metronomesâ, applying different sonic characteristics to on/off switches running at different equidistant (or not) paces.
Since every metronome is binary, putting a bunch of em together is similar to the idea of combinatorial math, and you can apply âvibesâ and material of varying levels of distortion to each subgroup of single, paired, tripled etc metronomes. Composing is then a matter of negotiating within those constraints and within those spans of time!!

Thank you for these short but phenomenally brilliant advice from Michael Finnissy! I'm not sure if I have a 'hardest part of writing music' moment. I've always found the hard part to shift unexpectedly. My last work's difficulty was me needing to destroy almost 8 minutes of well-worked out sketches because the idea behind was simply too uninspired for the materials to coalesce in a manner I find convincing.
