Online shopping is terrible for the environment when items are returned because many company's put a massive percentage of brand new products that are returned into the garbage/landfill instead of trying to re-sell them. That is a horrifying level of waste.
It should be illegal for companies to throw away perfectly good items.
They should atleast donate what they can.

I’m someone who is always been poor so shopping has always been a constant reminder of being broke so the idea of shopping twice for one item or returning something that I didn’t need to spend money on in the first place is kind of my nightmare

I return about .05% of what I buy. Unless it comes broken I never bother to return anything. Sometimes I buy things to take apart and never actually use for their intended purpose. I just need a part from something for a project and it is easiest to get it from a product instead of sourcing it by itself. That's the problem with being an engineer, everything is useful even if it doesn't work.

Stores lose money with returns as often can't go back on the shelves hence price rises. Just buy what needed and that fits.
