I always find when my kids fuses are short (ahem crazy holidays/broken routines) picking up a book and just starting to read helps 99% of the time.
They may still be screaming and crying when I do it, but after the first few pages, they’ve settled.
Maybe it’s because my attention is grounded on the words instead of feeling anxious about their big feelings? Maybe it’s the deliberate break in the train wreck that was unfolding? Who knows
Lmk if you do this or try it this week and it works!

Yes! Works so well. I used to do this in my classroom as well to settle down my class when they were riled up after recess/fieldtrip/assembly etc. or on days when there was just lots of random bickering. I find picking which story to be important too. I always aim for immediately interesting/captivating (usually focused on illustrations here) but with a slower paced and less action packed story. Some that we’ve used for this purpose this week are: - Red Sled by Lita Judge (slightly silly and few words all onomatopoeias so encourages pauses and observation) - The Snowman by Raymond Briggs (wordless, we make up our own words/ talk about the pictures) - Norbert the Winter Gnome by Daniela Drescher (board book with interesting illustrations) - Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost and illustrated by Susan Jeffers (find the hidden animals) - Into the Snow by Yuki Kaneto (simple story, a child’s experience of snow) - Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklem (we have the collection but there are several individual seasonal stories, each about a neighborhood of mice with sweet calming stories and illustrations you could easily spend ten minutes staring at before turning the page)
