The Benefits of Boar Bristle Brushes

👩‍🦱
A boar bristle brush is made up of very closely packed, stiff boar bristles. What sets apart a boar bristle brush is that a regular brush is designed to detangle the hair. A boar bristle brush, which only has 100% boar bristles, is not designed to detangle the hair, but rather, it's designed as a styling and health maintenance tool for the hair. So how does it do this?

First of all, because it's made up of literal hairs, albeit much stiffer hairs than ours, and you're brushing your own hair with it, it does a really, really cool, unique job at cleansing the hair and smoothing down the hair cuticles, removing dust and debris. It's basically the historical equivalent of dry shampoo, because it does such a good job at picking up your scalp oils, bringing them away from your scalp, removing any visible greasiness. And then, as you bring the brush down the length of your hair, it draws those oils down the lengths of your hair and conditions your hair.

I use boar bristle when I style my kinky curly hair wet. It helps smooth and organize the curl pattern so it looks sleek and wavy when I use gel/leave in conditioner. Zero flyaways!

Does anyone else remember, I'm thinking I must have learned this from literature, the 100 strokes a night rule? This would definitely have been a great cleanliness tool.

It would be nice to see a video on how to care for, clean, and maintain the brush. I have 2 brushes one is more stiff than the other. I love the smell of the boar bristles. Wonderful ❤

I’m a licensed cosmetologist in the US and this was a fact we were taught! It was on a couple of our tests and in our text book

I started using one after finding one of your video tutorials! My hair is extremely thin, wavy, and fluffy/frizzy. And low porous on top of that! (Meaning it barely absorbs any product I apply.) It's to the point where multiple hair stylists had no idea how to make it less frizzy. The historical method is helping a lot! I can spread out the grease onto the dry parts, and then I use a hair powder to absorb the excess grease from my roots. And a bonus for me is that the boar bristle brush can be used very effectively to detangle too 🤭 Yes, it's not what they're made for, but it's perfect for my super thin hair

Have always used a boar bristle brush..in fact, I have two different kinds of boar bristle brushes. One I use to style my hair, and the second one, I use in my nightly brush routine.

I encouraged my partner to get one for his beard, and the improvement is incredible for day to day! People really don't realize for hair care they should have a comb and brush for detangling and a comb and brush for styling (that's a big part of why there is a small side and a large side to combs! But certain hair types need wider teeth on a comb than the "traditional" ones)

I've just started to regrow my hair. It's just over 3 inches now. Since it's so short the oil has nowhere to go. So I've been using a boar bristle brush to help remove some of the excess. When I had hair my mom had taught me to use head and shoulders every day. Every day! At least now it can grow out healthy. I'm only washing it when it needs it now and I use a small amount of castor oil on the very ends after I shower. I'm using a normal shampoo AND a conditioner! Lol. I'm making sure my hair is healthy and happy so I can be happy too. To be clear I willingly got a buzz cut because my hair was too difficult to manage. I didn't get sick or anything. I loved the way it looked. But I miss being able to style it so I'm growing it out and I'm going to learn to keep it healthy so I enjoy having hair this time. 👍 I also comb my hair focusing on my scalp. It's short enough that I can use a regular comb. I find that helps reach the scalp better than the boar bristle brush

For the same reason a boar bristle is good at dispersing oils down your hair shaft, it is also good for dispersing dry shampoo and reducing the white cast it can cause

I use one for my 20 month old baby girl !! ❤ and I've noticed ALL of what u mentioned ! Plus it makes her hair REALLY soft ❤ i have natural candy curls which WERE about the length of my waist but i cut it to just above my shoulders and have kept it up in a messy bun (cuz, I'm a stay at home mom to a 20 month old and homemaker , so, i need my hair out of my face and not weighing me down as i am constantly exhausted enough already, plus, when my hair was waist length, it took me FOREVERRRRRR to take a shoeer cuz i had to very carefully detangle my hair while washing and conditioning and gathering all the hair sheds , BUT i am now kinda regretting it cuz it DESTROYED my natural curl pattern. Thankfully though, my hair grows pretty fast and it seems to be returning to its natural candy curls ! ❤ yay ! ❤️

I also love the denman boar bristle brush that also detangles with its separate flexible bristles throughout the brush that ever so gently detangles. The combs I’ve used have been the wide tooth combs like the curved double teeth that’s shaped like a hand with a single handle. I would use a boar bristle brush once the hair is detangled and even oiled since it’s not always easily detangled unless this is done first. Maybe just the perimeter in aid of styling before washing? I’m washing less and less as I don’t have an overproduction of oils and only wash when I oil the hair. My scalp is never the problem, but I like to cleanse the scalp so I don’t accumulate dead skin cells on the scalp and thus clog the follicles. I believe boar bristle brushes can aid in keeping the scalp healthy too if used towards it. Thanks for the inspiring video!

As someone who has greasy, densely populated hair, I always found boar bristle brushes were the only thing that worked for me. It's so cool to find out why!!

Vintage nylon brushes are so underrated aswell. I used to turn my nose up to them over boar brushes. Turns out i use them even more than my boar brushes. They distribute the sebum and clean the scalp just as good 🙂
