delivering a 32 cm. sized package to its destination on the last street would've been frustrating to the delivers

I would not call these streets, they are alleyways, except the first ones. I doubt any of the later ones actually have entrances to houses on them. Most of them are just due to weird building rules at the time. I know for example in Germany there was a time in the middle ages where people got taxed exclusively on the size of the ground floor, which meant people would try to build their houses wider towards the top. There's actually quite a few small streets that are practically tunnels, even though you're technically walking between two seperate houses.

They just called small gaps between buildings a street and called it a day

What does define street here? The first one would be considered wide by Tokyo backstreet users. There are hundreds of narrow footpathes between "real" streets or to house entrances or shrines.

Yeah this is super disingenuous. ā€œStreetā€ isnā€™t a well defined international standard so whilst some of these are locally classed as ā€œstreetsā€ they function as alleyways or footpaths. My address is on ā€œ______ walkā€ but itā€™s wide enough for motorised vehicles. But then thereā€™s another building near me on ā€œ_____ streetā€ thats entirely pedestrian and has enough landscaping that a standard sized motor vehicle wouldnā€™t fit.

Yes, if you completely remove everything we use to define a street, they can be as narrow as you want. Good video

Whether you call it a street or an alley is really just a matter of opinion though, isn't it? Those are not streets, they are just alleys that people are calling streets. So no, it's not crazy at all.

Fantan Alley is a real fun excursion, when I am in a touristy mood roaming my hometown.

It's nice that there are at least some streets where you can't get run over by an SUV in.

In a lot of places, the minimum width of a street is that which would allow an emergency vehicle to pass through and perform its duties.

Just walked past FanTan Alley tonight! Itā€™s a really cool little street in Chinatown. Lots of cool shops and old buildings.

Theres one in iran called "consolation street" in Shiraz. Because it can't fit 2 people side by side, but it can if they go horizontally. People go there and hug each other because there's no room for a punch

so many more streets in Asian Cities have not only "streets" as wide as most of the mentioned, but also are actually more like streets than alleyways in a functional context as the front doors of houses are accessed via the narrow paths
