Mycobacteria-specific T cells (red) stop migrating after exposure to a mycobacterial antigen (p25) in granulomas of live animals. This arrested movement indicates that the T cells recognize and bind to the antigen. The T-cell response to the added p25 antigen is very strong because almost all the T cells stop moving after its addition.
The green cells are T cells specific to a chicken egg protein used as a control antigen for the experiment. These cells stop moving when the antigen OVA323 is injected into the animals. These results indicate that arrested movement is a general feature of T cell antigen-recognition in granulomas. They also show that this arrested movement is specific for the antigen recognized by a particular T cell.
