12 is probably just about the right age to have this talk, though kids often ask at a much younger age when they don't yet have the cognitive skills to understand that yes dad may make 50k a year but only a tiny amount of that ends up as disposable income, if he's lucky. All they hear at 6 or 8 is that my dad makes alot of money, when it's really not that much money at all, especially with a kid in the picture. I think the world would be better if kids realized exactly how much they were going to cost their parents for 18-21years or longer, they might have a better appreciation for things.
