Another cool jig we built! A continuously variable (between 3”-6”) layout marking jig for laying out picket spacings!! AND it worked pretty well!

I use flexible bad tape from a fabric store, the stuff they use in pants and shorts. Roll it out, and make marks every 2in. Fix one end, and when you pull it out you can stretch the marks to what ever size you want. If you want 6in spacing, I pull the end till I get 6in on the last 2 marks at the end. Every mark down the tape is now 6in apart.

Take a piece of 2×4 and put a handle on it, costs all of maybe $1 if you use fancy drawer handle, stick it in between each spindle and screw it down, rinse and repeat. Most of the rails worldwide have a spindle spacing of a 2×4

Use 1" elastic from the fabric store. Roll out flat and use a sharpie & tape measure to mark 2" intervals. Track at one end and stretch out to desired spacing.

I usually just measure center then use a 4” block to mark.

Man!! What a great idea. I do layout like this all the time. Building docks. Building boats and what ever else. I’m def going to build one out of aluminum. Thanks.

I used an aluminum one of these when I made steel railings for a living. They are nice.

Nice. Could you just buy a few smaller ones and re-rivet them together? As long as they will do at least a 4" spacing?

Me and my girl visited Bryson City a couple months ago. We stopped at the Air BnB in town. That remodel was the first time I saw you fellas use this technique. Top notch stuff guys!!

Bro that just takes way too long.. find the center mark of the rail place a balister there, then use a 2×4 for spacing to get under the 4inches that's allowed. Once all the tops of your balisters are attached go back with a torpedo level and plum the balister before setting it. Works much faster and don't have to build something different.

Because measuring at a certain distance with a measuring tape doesn’t work ?

Nice work. It's essentially a pantograph, which you can but for approx. $25 at an art supply store.

Very nice! There are places you can buy these although I'm not sure where. I'm impressed that you made your own, definitely a big time saver!
