Have you ever listened to what it sounds like inside a pile of wood and garden clippings? There’s a new project by the company Sound Matters who recorded the sounds that tell the story of Great Dixter Gardens, both its human and wildlife. Visitors will be able to listen to it through listening pods from 2024.
I absolutely loved this extract – the sound of insects and invertebrates munching away, breaking down the wood in a ‘habitat pile’ at Great Dixter, so Sound Matters and Great Dixter have given me permission to share it with you. And if you want to increase your own biodiversity, you don’t need to make a habitat pile that big in your own garden – just stack up a few clippings in the corner of the garden or behind a border.
There are more tips from Great Dixter’s Fergus Garrett on adding biodiversity to your garden in the full interview on the Middlesized Garden YouTube channel.
