I thought the same about Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries for the first chapter too, but when I moved past that I absolutely ADORED it. I ended up loving how the highly academic writing style totally matched the slight awkwardness of the character, it just made it so memorable for me. I found that the plot was a bit patchy to begin with but then it really hooked me, and the formal writing style didn't impede the portrayal of tense or suspenseful moments

I read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries as one of my first fantasy books with the fae 😅 I had heard so much about the romance and how incredible it was…but I didn’t even feel like I experienced it and was so confused at the confession of love because of how focused I was on trying to figure out how the fantasy world worked.
I did really enjoy it, but I think I’m just not a fantasy kind of girl 🥲

I finally felt like my slight dislike towards Caraval is well-founded.. I remember when I read it a few years back and everyone was saying about how good it was which lost me 😅
