My aunt has been paying zero electricity bills since January 2022.

Here’s how.

She had gotten solar panels installed at her place in January 2022.

One of the common problems that people usually face is that the installation of solar panels comes with a significant upfront cost. Sure it gets recovered over a span of a few years but the upfront cost is usually what creates friction in going ahead with it.

To provide aid for this problem, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India has launched the ‘Har Ghar Muft Bijli’ scheme. This scheme offers a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 on the installation of solar panels.

The subsidy structure looks like this:
Rs. 30,000/- per kW up to 2 kW
Rs. 18,000/- per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW
Total Subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW capped at Rs 78,000

The process is very simple.

1. You need to know your average monthly electricity consumption (in units). You can easily find this mentioned on your electricity bill.

2. Now depending on your consumption, decide what KW solar panel is suitable for you.

Let’s understand this with an example. Let’s say your average monthly consumption is 300 units. So the suitable solar panel for you would be of 3KW to generate your required electricity. (I have attached the official document by the government in the comments - where they have mentioned for how many units - what KW would be suitable and how much subsidy would be granted.)

3. Go to the official portal of PM Surya Ghar, register and apply for the solar panel. I have mentioned the steps in detail in the comments.
