MULTIBAND COMP VS DYNAMIC EQ πŸ₯Š

πŸŽ›οΈ This is the difference between Multiband Compression and Dynamic EQ.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Multiband Compression involves compressing the peaks of the frequency spread to reduce the dynamic range.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dynamic EQ is raising or lowering the volume of a specific frequency range... Lets say 2k - 5k.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dynamic EQ is best suited for addressing specific frequency issues,

πŸ‘‰πŸ» While Multiband Compression is ideal for managing the overall dynamic range and tonal balance of a mix.

I think Streaky should do a full video explaining this at length. This clip is causing confusion.

That's completely wrong. They're both doing compression and reducing dynamic range. A multiband compression will compress a signal that has been band limited by crossover filters, and a dynamic EQ will compress a frequency by applying gain reduction to a filter.

A good teacher makes a complicated subject/concept easy to understand. Love this channel.

Not strictly true, since you lose dynamic range at the frequency being turned down. Don't mind Streaky overall, but a bit of oversimplification happened here. 😬 NB: remove the word 'dynamic' and this video is correct. Dynamic eq by definition reduces dynamic range

Wow... I have been producing the music for last three years but couldn't understand this. Thank You so much

Disagree. Love your channel, but this one doesn’t sit right with me. Dynamic EQ changes dynamic range too.

I was thinking about this comparison the other day! Thanks for the explanation

Not quite accurate: mb comp affects larger areas of the frequency spectrum hence, yes, it ultimately affects by compressing MORE the overall dynamics. Dynamic eq can become way more surgical by providing very narrow q’s and much more flexibility in the behaviour of minute areas of momentary compression, thereby affecting much less the overall dynamics of the track yet still smoothing very narrow bands of offending frequencies only when needed.

Moreover, with dynamic eq you can control very narrow bands compared to multi band comp.

So many people think they can't sing so they can't do this. Bullshit! With tuning and fx anyone, and I mean, anyone can do this! Thanks for showing so many producers the way!

How can dynamic range be kept when on loud notes dynamic EQ turns them down???

This is perfect explanation, but compression is also a tool for creating dynamics between different instruments or sounds

So what dynamic eq is just a normal eq?

@MittensUK

I disagree, bad simplification. Multi-band compression doesn't push the sound down, it reduces the level going beyond the threshold (going up) by the ratio. Dynamic EQ starts cutting (pushing the sound down) at a determined attack speed until it reaches it's gain range when it exceeds a threshold. The way you simplified it should be the other way round in my opinion.

A not related question: do anyone knows if there's a clipper that cuts ALL the transient by a certain given amount? For example, a drum clip will have big transients for kick, snare and toms so when you apply a limiter/clipper it will automatically bring the hi hats up too much so it will be useful a "transient clipper" more than a "threshold clipper" (get it?). Hope you can understand with this example because i wouldn't know how to explain it otherwise...
