Climbed Mt. Washington in the Olympics by myself one nice June day. There was still quite a bit of snow in Big Creek Basin and the upper mountain. As I came down a slightly different route back into Big Creek Basin, once I found my earlier tracks, I realized I didn’t have the mountain to myself after all. Right next to my tracks and following them were cougar tracks — I was being stalked. Kept my ice axe ready for action all the way back to my truck.

I have fought a bear for my ice chest of food using only a shovel to hit it. I have had them sniff me on the outside of my tent during the night. So i smack the wall and tell them to leave. One another time stuck it's head in my tent while i was sleeping. I woke up and grabbed a hammer i had laying there and hit it between the eyes as hard as i could. It never bothered me again. . I have walked around the corner of a board fence straight into a huge cow moose with a young calf. In the Artic circle i road a atv right up on a full grown wolf. They are huge. Alot bigger than dogs. If i thought back i have more even with mountain cat's. More scary stuff with bears also.

Glacier NP - At a distance and in our travel path on the Pitimakin/Dawson Pass counter clockwise trail about 2-3 miles from trailhead- black bear with young cub. I managed to grab a long range shot of baby crossing the trail- so cute! Same trail heading to pass - I heard a large groan- I’m thinking it was a grizz waking from a nap. I took about 15 minutes to let myself be known and proceeded ahead. I was super paranoid around every corner after that as that was a solo hike. Also Many Glacier area- moose chowing on greens deep into a large shallow lake - simply got impatient and wanted to eat in privacy- there were about 20 people on shore- he/she false charged us-even from that far away what a rush! Grinnell Glacier hike- bighorn sheep with horns and his females above us not far from the trail- steep exposure. Same trail - mountain goat lounging on a large rock below us. Mt Hood east on hwy 35 heading south- returning home from a hike on Cooper Spur trail- rounded the corner and a massive bull elk with full hornage lol right in the middle of the road. I’m thankful that there was no traffic after dark and the elk decided to head to the other side of the road!! Many other stories+ mostly weird and possibly dangerous human encounters- no harm so far.
