I am med student and I started watching scrubs in the last semester of med school .It really gave me some kind of peace apart from laughter because of how relatable and real it was and actually some great advice just like this one

Dr Cox might sound harsh but he was also very right. My doctor said something along the same lines, only in nicer words since he was a nice old man 😅 He said "I can prescribe all the medication you need for the issue you're having right now but all I'm doing is treating a symptom. You have to want to care about your health yourself for me to be able to really help you live your best life." I barely get sick as an adult but yeah, when I get sick it's usually something major like dengue...man, that was a pain to get

And the other truth, if you think about it: Doctors can mostly treat the SYMPTOMS of a sickness but can't prevent you from getting sick in the first place.

I used to think Dr Cox was just a miserable a-hole but he was tough and gave good advice aside from his constant sarcasm. Now I’m his age and I’m Dr Cox in my own profession.

Reminds me of the advice that he gave in the "My Old Lady" episode about being afraid of death. In the end, the hospital is just a stopgap for people. No matter how many sick or hurt patients they treat, they can't stop death, only delay it for a while

Good advice. A person can't be responsible for the actions of others.

I love Dr.Hope's words: the healthcare system and support -includes mental health/emotional health support too, not just from healthcare professionals but from family and friends... the public... Without stigma of therapy, rehab, or how partypooper it may be for a friend to choose to quit smoking, drinking or whatever... Then they could actually cope better...instead of people adding to temptations or just basically adding to burn out... It's hard enough to face it in yourself to take responsibility, quit stuff or etc... but it's even worse when there's people saying you aren't, when you are, and people who egg you on into going back to your old ways...

This is the best advice for people out there struggling with a sickness. It's never gonna heal with some magic pill or the constant therapy sessions. Healing is a collaborative effort, both on your part and on the doctor's part. You can't expect your kidneys to be better if you always make an excuse for drinking.

So true. I struggled with this as a nurse. Inwould see patients abuse alcohol over and over. Hearing their backstories made me less judgemental and more caring and accepting. Listen to people. Not all the fingers on our hands are equal, same with people. Some have more strength than others. 😢some are broken and abused, and their souls are now broken. Its harder to heal someone soul

I should have continued with physiotherapy, but with some personal stuff going on, and the eternal ADHD problems, it's really hard to maintain the continuity and planned schedule... It gets really difficult for neurodivergent people, sadly. And the system completely fails to take that into account.😓

Even if the rookie did want to try and address that it'd be outside his scope of practice. More the job of a Psychotherapist than a General Practitioner.

I'm so gung-ho about trying to 'change' that I'm always the first to get new experiments thrown at me by my doctors. And since I've tried everything, my insurance will approve almost anything. I have benefitted a lot from it. I love new treatments. Though I hate when the treatments I have to take involve my diet- those are always calls I have to make on my own. This isn't some sort of 'I'm better than other people', just conversing.

yes help and treat them of course but try to snap them into taking responsibility and holding themselves accountable too, too many of the world’s problems is because people don’t do that and prefer to play the victim/martyr OR EVEN cause things so they can self-victimise/do that! Or even blame others! Never themselves, the poor innocent angelic victims!
