Patrick McNamara is a renowned figure in the field of neuroscience, with a special focus on the interdisciplinary study of religion, dreams, and the neurology of the human brain's complex functions. His work sits at the fascinating intersection of science and spirituality, exploring how neurological processes underpin religious experiences, dreams, and various psychological phenomena. McNamara is an associate professor in the Department of Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, where he also serves as the director of the Evolutionary Neurobehavior Laboratory.

With a Ph.D. in the field, McNamara's research contributions include a deep dive into the neurological basis of human social behavior, the evolution of the human brain, and the impact of neurological disorders on religious and spiritual experiences. He has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly articles and books that explore these topics in depth, aiming to bridge the gap between the neurosciences and the understanding of human consciousness and spirituality.

McNamara's work is widely respected for its innovative approach to studying complex brain functions and behaviors. By applying rigorous scientific methods to areas traditionally explored by theologians and philosophers, he has opened new pathways for understanding the human condition. His insights not only contribute to the academic field but also offer intriguing perspectives on the nature of belief, the structure of dreams, and the evolution of the human brain, making his work relevant to a broad audience interested in the science of the human mind.

Another reason to stop drinking, or reduce the amount you consume considerably. Alcohol, reeks havoc on the brain, causes memory loss, mainly long-term, inflammation, and alcohol dementia.

I feel like we are doing all the technicalities and complexity to understand that simple life is better. For this we sacrificed our leisurely way of living and now not everyone can afford that simple lifestyle.

Marijuana consumption severely decreases the amount of time of REM sleep. So, regardless of what Mr. Dogg may say, you shouldnt smoke weed everyday.

What about dreams that dogs have? Horses? Is it just domesticated animals? If pigs dream, it really indicts us as a species, doesn't it?

Neurologists need to help people with sleep-associate problems even more.

I have almost more strange associations when I am awake. On coffee. I have very vivid dreams but they are more like social realism πŸ€ͺ

The way he spoke it sounded as if REM was uniquely human. Yes it is absolutely critical for many mammals' brain health memory creativity and essentially sentience. But it's just as critical for rats. So "our special this and that" is very misleading. It's like if a genius and an average person both ate Cheerios, you can sort of credit the food for nourishing genius, but you are missing context to the point of being misleading.

OK. How do we get the brain to stop doing that ?

Never tried it but wondering is LSD artificially makes these synapses happen to create the same connections to promote creativity? Thinking of Steve Jobs and his visions.
