I feel like dogs are generally more inherently innocent and also unable to use modern weapons (guns, etc) to defend themselves so it's definitely different.

Yes, Diane. Your feeling is a sign of your profound kindness and humanity. I felt exactly as you do now when I was younger. Now, however, I hardly watch any movie ever, so that sort of issue is hardly a problem for me anymore.

Dogs are lovers of life and the envy of their human parents because we wish to have their life of little care.They are sweet natured if treated kindly and are the only creatures who can pick us up when there is no one else at our side.

Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller... so traumatized me I can't watch any movie with a dog in it.

I remember short movie about a young boy in the Getto adopting a stray kitten, but the kitten got killed and that broke my heart.
And of course there is "Old Yeller" Not to mention there is a song about the dog, which it worst for pet lovers with emotional break down.

I can be the same way. A few years ago, I took a DVD of Old Yeller up to my Dad's place for us to watch. Dad didn't remember it. Then, about halfway through, Dad tensed and I saw him cringe. He remembered what was going to happen.
I think we get hit harder by seeing a dog die because (1) dogs are innocent. They've been bred to be loyal to humans, and we look on them as children. No one wants to see children die. (2) Most people, outside of, say, military, law enforcement, and medical fields, don't have a lot of experience seeing other people die. But a lot of us HAVE seen our pets die. We know what it's like, and seeing a dog die on screen brings that right back to us.

I agree 100 percent. I quit the Boy Scouts because they killed a toad. I went home in tears and never went back.

Same same. I can watch medical shows, not even flinch. Anytime I see an animal at a vet, I cringe so bad. I think it is because it is easy to let a human know that this will hurt but it is for your own good. Almost impossible to communicate that to a pet or animal.
