How to use multiband compression when mixing⬇️

If you have a vocal stem and the higher frequencies are sounding okay but you have a very spiky middle…

This is where you can use a multiband to just compress a specific frequency range within the vocal so the top still sounds dynamic!🎛️

By compressing just the low mids of a vocal, it can warm up the vocal and make it sound more together…

Whilst keeping the top end still sounding open, bright and uncompressed!💡

Because if you’re compressing the whole vocal as one…

It can make the vocal sound a lot thinner, less dynamic in top end and therefore you’ll have a thin vocal🎤

Rather than a nice fat warm one🔥

That’s one way you can use a multiband compressor for vocals!

Love your quick tips but would appreciate some more context… Just like this it’s almost like you’d say “you can drive car with a steering wheel…” For example what would vocal chain look like, where to put it do I have to compress this vocal before/after/no compression etc

Some people you it as a auto eq add eq on bass and treble when needed and helps with bassey tracks abd some use it to give you a more consistent and unique sound like a eq that single compressor cant do

Even if I had this Fabfilter MB plugin I‘d never be able to shape the sound/mix like you do … 😏

Muliband compressor is better because you dont get that pumping effect pumping is caused on single band compressor because it compressor all the frequencs where muliband compressor does on compressor the lows for example and the rest are not

Question.. if you like thr tone of a compressor, is there any curcumstance where you could use filters on a duplicate to isolate a band and just use it on that? Then blend the otiginal back in.. like a parallel compression but on one band?

Wait, you're expanding or compressing? You get a fat vocal sound by COMPRESSING the mid-range?
