BIG Pikmin fan and content creator here. That story was actually made up by Miyamoto to help people understand the game. Apparently another developer realized it while they were in the "Stone Age Sims" phase of Pikmin's development

Actually in another interview Miyamotto admitted that he made up the garden story. Because he tought it would be more interesting to explain how the game worked. That kind of put into question if his story about Zelda being inspired from his adventure into caves is fake too.

Miyamoto later admited that he made up the garden story to make the game sound more interesring, it was originally called adam and eve and you would build a village and you would act as their god I'm pretty sure.

First played a Pikmin game because a friend owned it and as good friends we were we would let each other borrow each other's games. I let him borrow one of mine and he let me borrow one of his which was Pikmin 1.

Whoever's idea it is was to change the series logo designs to a genaric green tone/font that blends horribly with the background should never be allowed to do graphic design again. Better yet, fire them. Save themselves the trouble

I've always thought the game was underrated I would honestly say I love it just as much as shigeru miyamoto it's been a long time favourite for me since I was a child and will always be one of my favorite games and the one that really brought me into being a video game nerd.
