Let the musicians do the music they love. Your opinion missed the mark too.

I actually felt very engaged when listening to this album. It was very refreshing, and I feel like it supports an evolved Royal Blood sound. Songs like Tell me when it’s too late, High Waters and Triggers have the elements of baby Royal Blood but still coincide with the album sound. Songs like MaM, Waves, Shiner in the Dark give me a feeling of evolution and I think the sound overall with the layers you can hear in the song show the progression the band has made. I do think that if this was combined with 2 more songs similar to how they used to write songs such as Sleep or HDWGSD, this album would be crazy popular. For me it’s an 8/10 on average, and I love it. Not better than the first two albums, but I don’t choose to rate an album based off of their previous albums because that’s just delusion (how can you form an opinion of a song based on how another song sounds, which is what many people do?)

I actually like this album a lot. It’s much better than their last one, and maybe my favorite since the self-titled album. I honestly enjoy some of the slower songs, even if they do feel like filler and they’re not as strong as the hard rock stuff. Waves is beautiful and reminds me a lot of the indie rock I grew up on (Vampire Weekend, MGMT, etc.), and the title track and Tell Me When It’s Too Late go crazy hard. It’s definitely a more melancholy album for the band, and I really enjoy that. 8/10 for me. Sorry you didn’t like it as much, Jon. Hopefully their next one impresses you more :)

i'm kinda surprised by the lukewarm reaction to this one. I really enjoyed it. Apart from a few radio-rock tracks that didn't do it for me there are songs on this record that really just go balls to the walls, and went places that Typhoons felt too timid to go. calling this one a mistake is a bit harsh IMO. This certainly feels like an album that people might re-evaluate in a few years as being not as bad as they remember. I was smiling wide at some of the instrumental work and the first half is very strong, let down by an average second half which is a complaint that can be applied to so many albums that, for me at least, it really doesn't sour the real bangers on this album.

I actually though the record was very engaging for the most part. Of course there are the great singles, but moments like Tell Me When It's To Late, Triggers, High Waters and especially the closer Waves were very refreshing to me. I consider this album to be better and more engaging then Typhons, and because of that I give it a respectable rating of a 3.5/5 to a 3.8 at max and something I could find myself returning to.

It absolutely blows my mind that both Nothing But Thieves and Royal Blood, two of my favorite bands to come out in the last decade, released their fourth albums this year
and you were disappointed by BOTH of them???

I actually quite like the album. At first, I was a bit confused by it, was hoping for a release similar to the self-titled after hearing 'Mountains at midnight'. But after 3 listens, grown on me massively. Love the singles and the non-singles I believe are better than some of the lackluster stuff on Typhoons like 'Who Needs Friends', 'Either you want it', and 'Hold On' Overall, not their best. Its never going to beat Self-titled or even hdwgsd, but I'm happy with what they released. 4/5

They took a step back to actually enjoy the sounds and music which I think was a brilliant idea. It still has some nasty sounds and songs, keeping they're vibe and shows that they don't hav to always repeat the same thing over and over again and play a bunch of notes super fast to be good. Mike's voice is brilliant slow and fast.

honestly i thought this was dropping next Friday, when did they move the release forward?? 😂 agreed though, not their best work at all. i'm one of the 10 people that loved Typhoons so much more than most did, so going from that to this feels so jarring

I actually had to relisten to the album today to fully submerge into the new sound and found it really intriguing. It's definitely something fresh, much like Typhoons was. Ever since Mike got sober their music bloomed in a new way for me

If I were to rank all Royal Blood's albums from best to worst it would start with How Did We Get So Dark?, Royal Blood (Debut), Back To The Water Below then Typhoons.

Who’s the pretentious gatekeepers saying their albums are decreasing in quality? Did no one listen to to typhoons? That album has no bad songs

I preordered this on vinyl and am waiting to hear it until it comes. I’m still excited for it, and I really liked the disco twist Typhoons had.

I actually think its pretty damn solid and im still a fan I think this album is probably they’re most moody or melancholy in a good way though. It definitely needs more time to sit with me but I really like 80% of this album. Give it time and it might jump up a bit for me. (Also people should give it time to simmer, a lot of people force out a rating and they haven’t had time to revisit songs, they might like more the next few times they listen to it)

“There Goes My Cool” kinda speaks for half of the album itself doesn’t it? Rather mid album, but still hopeful for Royal Bloods future.

I genuinely couldn’t put it better mate, really agree with your opinion. Just lacks punch, excitement and the biggest thing for me is that it sounds like they struggled to write so many of the songs. They just don’t flow the way they did since the first album and maybe Lights Out/Hook,Line & Sinker.
