I just realized a lot of average Filipinos speak 2-3 languages even at a young age . That’s 1 English, then there’s Tagalog, then there’s their provincial dialects most cases they're so fluent at all of it it's pretty awesome ✨

Don't worry, calling you nicknames is a kind of endearment too, maybe they like you...

Pilipinos love giving nicknames mostly as endearment and making fun with no malice. It’s funny I was explaining this nicknames to my American husband just last night. (I’m 65 yr old Pilipina who immigrated to California 43 yrs ago). I have 4 brothers with nicknames: “Ponga” becase he looks Chinese, “Bukol” means bump, because he had a bump on the head when he was 3 yrs old, “Kenkoy” his name is Ken and always says funny things, and “Negro” because he was born with darker skin than any other children. I can see how the children can easily have given you the kalbo nickname. It’s true that it’s very common in the Philippines. Glad you also find it funny. Thanks for sharing.

See how much effort filipino people in learning foreign language just to communicate with you. That's why we also appreciate foreigners learning tagalog when they're here.

Sometimes there are kids that would call you names, even say the n-word. They don't mean to be discriminatory or racist, they just don't know how there are words that could offend those that are not used to our culture

When Filipino kids immigrated to other country teachers are so amazed that they can already read and write at their young age.
