I've struggled with back stiffness and occasional pain since I was a teenager; I'm now 40(m). A few years ago when on holiday I tried pool yoga for a laugh and I felt so good that I found some yoga youtube videos and have been doing it a few times a week ever since. I've been pain and stiffness free for the first time ever.

And walking too much can cause you pain as well. I have a lower back injury and while walking does help, up to a point, after that point it cause your muscles to stiffen and your back to hurt again or even more. I have a job where I walk about 4 - 6 miles every 8 hour shift.
Now, this is just my own experience and can differ for others.

I swear when I do anything "too long" (which feels like anything at this point) including walking, it majorly increases my chronic, lower back pain. Walking especially. It's not that I enjoy not being active - I actually hate that I can't be as active as I used to be or go on hours-long "walk & talks" with my best friend during Summer nights. It's very frustrating. Sometimes, the pain of walking can actually put me out of commission longer than not walking will. (I'm talking about walking that's required for running errands, not just sitting around all day doing nothing). Errands used to be easy and something I never really thought about and actually even enjoyed doing 20 yrs ago and even worse 10± yrs ago.
* had to correct a word I left out- enjoyed

If this hurts though, you may need stability in your core muscles. Squat University talks about this stuff all the time and gives great tips/info on it! Love both of these doctors
