Battler is a better Protagonist than Light Yagami and can be argued to be the most enjoyable character in the series. He has more depth and had also arguably the best character development in series. He has far better emotions, psychology and philosophy than light. Light is only better than first or if if I High ball him may be second but battler still had Better humour than him even during that time.

The edit is great but it would have never occured to me to compare the two: Umineko is a massive and almost-unanimously acclaimed work that presents a whole philosophical universe and a unique and touching story, while Death Note develops a shallow philosophical dilemma even though it remains a thrilling piece of entertainment.

Umineko is too unique to be compared to most stories but yeah, although its pacing can be pretty horrendous, Umineko overall has more depth and better character writing. U are most certain to find something new about it whenever you read it again
