This isn't high-level, but it's something that still needs to be drilled into everyone's head (mine included on occasion) 🤷🏻‍♂️

More shitty elements piled on top of each other in search of a full sound will leave you disappointed.

4 or 5 killer elements is all you need most of the time 👍🏻

A do a high Q scan for bad resonant frequencies, cut them. Usually with my vocal in my booth i cut 4 frequencies with varying Q widths. Ill amplify some of the lows with my Scheps 73, HPF at 80hz and a small 12khz boost around 1 db. Seems to translate well in my case

Do you know what, I usually roll my eyes at a lot of the “tricks” but this one is actually legit, only thing I would add would be “Don’t do unnecessary processing without a good reason”

Pultec has left the room! The push pull counter action is what gives pultec its beautiful separation bro!! And that can be replicated exactly by using multiple EQ. Giving rules based advice on engineering is a sure fire way to mess people up. Teach principles do they can use the tools … instead of giving flat out rules that simply aren’t true.

It's too easy to think only analogue recording had issues with too many stages of processing, but too much math gives a weird sheen to the music that trying to fix with yet more EQ results in a harshness that somehow mysteriously still lacks presence.

And lo, it came to pass, dear brethren and sisters, that the wisdom was imparted unto us: thou shalt commence thy endeavors with a superior recording. For verily I say unto thee, a noble recording lays the foundation for greatness. Behold, when thou embark upon the journey of creation, whether it be in the realm of music, spoken word, or visual arts, thou must invest in instruments of recording that are of excellence.
