I usually just push the screw tip into something solid and reverse until it grabs

I now use a FESTOOL CENTROTEC BIT HOLDER, you can get cheaper ones that do the same thing. Easy if you are driving in loads of screws.

you can also drive another screw at a slight angle into the hole of the first screw and use it to catch the threats and back the stuck screw out
