I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I do the same thing, using a very small brush instead of a palette knife. When I think ir correct or close enough, I put it directly onto the painting, (which needs to be fully dry first) and compare what adjustments are needed as you did. The problem comes when just trying to mix the correct amount of the colour you need. But I'll get that with practice.

What art needs is to feel appropriate. It is impossible to bring out the color of an object with 100% accuracy, and it would be unwise to try to reproduce it deliberately if the materials are not the same. Moreover, different materials will have different color tones, and if you paint your own painting according to the same pattern, it will not be 100% exactly the same the second time. This comparison method finds color methods. It's okay even for general production. But to create a true artist's own sense of color, this method is the worst.
