First have a look at the essentials of your drums, especially if layering or making them yourself.

Ask yourself, are the transients clear and present?

Is the bass of the kick good?

Are all my kick layers / all my snare layers in tune with each other?

Are the levels right?

Once I make sure my basics are correct I then route all my drums to a single drum group. On that group I have a glue compressor with about 5db gain reduction, a slow attack and a faster release.

I turn up the makeup gain by ear until the drums sit loud enough in the mix. The slow attack makes the transients of the drums come through better whilst still allowing the compressor to make the drums sound more cohesive.

Sometimes if I want it more rough and ready, I’ll also put a light saturation on the drum channel. Be careful though because too much saturation can kill your transients and the ‘snappyness’ of your drums.

The best mixing tip I ever heard was “write better music.” A well composed piece doesn’t need to be manipulated into working well, it just needs to be gently massaged.

Yep these days I find myself doing more loudness enhancements as opposed to actual tone shaping when it comes to drums, provided the source is a good one I find it needs a lot less transient and frequency shaping. Usually if I am shaping it’s more of a taste thing. Cheers! 🎉

He’s 99% right. But don’t take his words out of context. Mixed SUBTLY and THOUGHTFULLY, using 4-5 different compressors, distortions, limiters, etc, can sound GREAT when applied to an already great-sounding piece of audio.
