Diane, if i open with "Diane", I'm not angry. If I open with "Diane Elizabeth Jennings", then you're in trouble.

Well, Diane... Maybe it's the midwesterner in me, but I frequently start a message with, "Hi/Hello (person)," as a simple, friendly salutation, before segue into whatever reason I'm messaging them about. Especially if I'm not in regular contact with someone.

As a Southerner, I knew I was fine when my mom addressed me by just my first name, in a little trouble if she used my first and last name, in deep do do if she used my first, middle and last name.

I totally get that. For me the trigger is “we need to talk”. That phrase fills me with dread.

No, Diane, I don't think anyone is angry with you. Maybe it's a Euro thing. In the US we routinely address everyone by their first name except mom and dad... grandma and granddad.

I don't know. I can see myself writing a message saying, "Diane, you're doing great stuff on your channel."

Never assume

No, we can't agree on that. The problem with that approach is that it forces me to structure any message I write to you in a way that soothes your feelings even when there wasn't going to be anything in my message that was meant to hurt your feelings. If I begin a message with your name it will be solely because I want to be sure you know the message is intended for you. If I'm angry with you, that will become clear in the body of the message. The only thing jumping to conclusions in this scenario leads to is you getting upset twice - first by assuming I was mad at you and then by realizing that your assumption got you upset for no reason. That you blame me for the effect of your assumption is unfair to me, but of course me getting upset that your unfair assumption led to you being needlessly upset at me is still my fault. To avoid this kind of no-win scenario there are a couple of old sayings that you should take to heart when dealing with other human beings. The first is, don't go visiting my intentions, meaning don't presume to know my thoughts or feelings; instead, be patient and I will tell you what you need to know about how I feel and what I intend. Second, never assume, because when you assume you make an ass of u and me.

The "given name" issue notwithstanding, how could anyone be mad at you?! You are one of the sweetest, most genuine person I have seen on YouTube.
