Yeah, the snob phase of academically trained musicians. It's sad that many of us never snap out of it... But even worse still, in my opinion, is that a large portion of the academic sphere adopts it as de facto modus operandi. Coming from a completely different tradition, I am glad i never had one such a phase, but oh my, was I confused and frustrated by the mindset! My experience through that was almost debilitating for my composing, and to this day i struggle with echoes of it.

Well said. I've been writing some short stories recently, and noticed the same kind of thing happening within certain areas. I went to a Zoom meeting this morning where people who'd entered a flash fiction contest could hear the results of the judging. All three winners had very similar sorts of writing: they used big words - with finesse - to convey a feeling or open-ended thought. I understand that it's difficult to have a full "story in a 100 word piece of flash fiction, but you can do more than that. I was left feeling, "Okay, that's the sort of thing they want. Pedantic poetic prose that says, "Look how smart a writer I am," more than tells an interesting story. To be fair, even that sort of thing can be fun and interesting, if done well. But whilst I'm capable of writing that, I don't want to. It's, generally, not that interesting, with very little story-arc or poignancy. It actually is possible to write a fun/compelling/thoughtfully poignant story in 100 words. But it feels like those stories are frowned on by that group as not high-browed enough...

You said it. If you have to read a book or more than one essay before listening maybe you don't know what's happening in all the dozens of isms and schools. The goal could be to adhere to yo own praxis while also COMMUNICATING. Boulez 2nd Sonata I d rather hear before any Chopjn Ballade or Nocturne but why can't this happen with all supposedly great contemporary works. Even other Boulez, Wuorinen, Grimes, Wallen,Design etc. I don't always immediately get or relate to. Some of this changes in time or after repeated interest. But it's wonderful that there is this freedom to create Meaningfully and participate in the systems of distribution , critique etc.

I believe Samuel Andreyev is an extraordinarily gifted musical thinker and communicatorâI wish him every possible success. That having been said, I do see problems here. An increasingly âentertainment curiousâ mindset is a gradual repudiation of the art on the perfectly legitimate grounds that it stands in the way of the business, but art music and entertainment music work in opposite directions, in response to their respective agendas. One feeds the listener passively, essentially describing what Kant refers to as musical âwall-papersâ (third critique), or, more starkly, what Schoenberg called âworthless;â the other makes heavy demands on the listener, commensurately rewarding their engagement. If Mr. Andreyev wishes to eat, he can produce either kind; if he needs seven toilets and a yacht, then heâs much better off as an entertainer. Both are understandable, personal decisions. Thereâs no right or wrong here (yes; I know that Schoenberg and Heifetz occasionally wrote music in a popular style), but art music is a very stupid choice to go into for the moneyâthere is none. If you wish to be a musician, go into it for the right reasonsâand with eyes open. Be a musician, not an embittered wannabe âstar.â

You have a very healthy viewpoint about music and opened minded which shows great understanding of composition and composers.
