Washington state's Makah tribe clears major hurdle toward resuming whale hunts

The United States granted the Makah Indian Tribe in Washington state a long-sought waiver Thursday that helps clear the way for its first sanctioned whale hunts since 1999 and sets the stage for renewed clashes with animal rights activists.

The Makah, a tribe of 1,500 people on the northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, is the only Native American tribe with a treaty that specifically mentions the right to hunt whales. But it has faced more than two decades of court challenges, bureaucratic hearings, and scientific review as it seeks to resume hunting for gray whales.

The decision by NOAA Fisheries grants a waiver under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which otherwise forbids harming marine mammals. It allows the tribe to hunt up to 25 Eastern North Pacific gray whales over 10 years, with a limit of two to three per year. There are roughly 20,000 whales in that population.

I remember seeing an elderly Makah woman on TV years ago say "we don't need to do this, we don't eat whale anymore"

If you have such reverence for the ocean why kill the whales?

I'm no hippy or anything but whale hunts are completely un needed in this day and age, there are plenty of fish in the sea go hunt something else

Traditionally, they could be towed miles out to sea by the whale and have to paddle back, dead whale in tow, but no, they paddle out in a canoe, harpoon a whale, then a power boat comes in, someone shoots it with a .50 cal and they tow it to shore.

Are some people still unaware that whales are dying out? I don't believe traditions matter that much when you could be helping to wipe out an entire species.

I think k everyone should boycott the tribal casinos until this is prohibited and then we'll see if they keep hunting whales when the casino checks quit rolling in

Look at all these people who aren't Makah and their absolute ideas on how the Makah should surrender even more of their culture

As time goes on, people have to be reasonable and move on. Its doubtful these hunts are necessary. We should not be killing animals that are already in trouble. All our ancestors had things they did as traditions that they eventually gave up. Can't they find a way to feel as though they are honoring their beliefs without killing animals that are already struggling to survive?
