The cigarette thing I always thought was a cultural thing. Cause you also will see allot of French smokers if that same time period smoke in different beats then were used to. But I tried to look into it just now and apparently it was actually just more common in like the 40-50s for people to smoke in one of a handful of different ways. Which makes allot of sense because really the 2 or3 types of films you see stuff like that in are WWII , noir , and classic mobster movies. Which all either take place or we’re filmed in/around that’s time period. I also vaguely remember seeing greasers in movies smoke like that where they have there hand cups toward there face with the butt coming in between the middle and ring finger
