Fountain root beers are ok but Frostop, regional to the Midwest, is amazing! (and still available in honest-to-gosh kegs) The only other that comes halfway close is IBC.

Barq's root beer was originally from New Orleans. It's now owned by the Coca Cola company. Their slogan is "Barq's Has Bite!" I guess you were tasting the bite.
