It's funny, there was a good chunk of history where people realised being queer was just an identity and not some kind of value statement or affront to the beliefs of others. Not everywhere was as progressive as Berlin but reading accounts of gay and trans people from before the rise of fascism, and how many of their contemporaries treated them, it's very clear most people who weren't queer felt they didn't quite get it but it also wasn't a problem. In fact I'm pretty confident the people of the 1920's would be astounded we have the means and technology to let people live as their true selves yet there's so much resistance to just letting them do so.
