Once you start using panning, you'll start noticing how heavily panning is used in production. Listen to the intro of Long Distance Runaround by Yes. The Fender Rhodes is panned hard left and the guitar is panned hard right. Listening to them together sounds the way it should. Listening to them separately, you'll hear how they're playing two completely different melodies that are harmonized with each other. It's like an auditory illusion.
